WHAT ARE LIP FILLERS?

Nowadays, the fillers used for the face are made from Hyaluronic Acid (also known as HA) which is a substance that, as humans, we produce naturally. Hyaluronic acid is used a lot in the beauty and cosmetics industry as it can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water, making it very useful for dry, ageing skin, and being one of the most common ingredients in majority of the industry’s products.

When used in creams, or cosmetic products, it cannot penetrate the skin or go deep enough to give a dramatic effect that actually injecting it, in its purest form. Many brands are trying HA with miniscule molecules, attempting to penetrate deeper into the skin yet have not found anything as effective as HA injections, also known as… Fillers.

Being HA is something we naturally produce in our bodies and is what produces the collagen in our body, which then breaks down 1% every year after the age of 20, our body will also break down the filler, meaning it dissolves over time, which depending on what filler used, is around 6-9 months, although some people have had filler last for closer to a year. Filler is not permanent, if anyone says it is, please be cautious, at Aesthetics of Essex, Rayleigh, we only use the best quality fillers, for the safety of our patients.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are not only used in the lips; but they are also able to plump out wrinkles, restore volume to cheeks and eradicate those nasolabial lines (vertical lines at the side of your mouth, also known as smile lines). So if you’re thinking about facial fillers, here’s what you need to know.

The risks with HA over, say, silicone injections are incomparable. But, if something were to go wrong there’s an antidote. Your aesthetician will use another injection that effectively dissolves it and reverse the mistake. Silicone is something that would have to be surgically removed, and can then migrate, meaning over time it would shift, and move outside of the area treated.

Are lip fillers safe?

Lip fillers are an (local) aesthetic treatment so there’s always a chance that something could go wrong. This is why it’s incredibly important to only allow a qualified, reputable professional to do it. Our injectors, are nurses as we want to have the best aestheticians for our patients. Don’t ever be tempted to have your lip fillers at a spa or a beauty salon. A beautician hasn’t had the training that a cosmetic doctor has and they are most definitively not able to prescribe medication or treatment if something were to go wrong, and a lot of the time have been educated or qualified to both inject and dissolve.

Research with your doctor and ask to see the before and after shots for their patients. Make sure you see the product you’re being injected with too. During your treatment the product should be taken from the box. Everything should be transparent, if there is any discolouration to the products that are being injected into your lips/face, then you may be at risk as the products may be out of date. You should be able to see exactly what is going on and what is being used.

Are lip fillers painful?

You might not believe it, but treatment is not extremely painful. People have created a false stigma with lip injections. However, the discomfort is no worse than facial threading. But if the person administering the treatment is good, you won’t be in severe pain.

Of course, the discomfort level will mostly depend on your doctor’s technique, also bare in mind everyone’s pain threshold varies, and depending on your hormones, at certain times you may be a lot more sensitive to pain.

At Aesthetics of Essex we locally anaesthetize the area with a 5% numbing cream, and we advise coming (minimum) 30 minutes before your appointment for fillers so we can generously apply the topical numbing cream to the area as the longer your cream is on, the more effective it will be and the less pain you will feel.
