Thread Veins are little blue, purple or red veins that are exposed and visible to the naked eye as they’re close to the surface of the skin.
Thread veins tend to be harmless, yet can be quite an inconvenience when visible on areas that are exposed on a daily basis, such as hands, legs, or the face. Leaving the person suffering from thread veins conscious of them.
Although the exact cause of thread veins and spider veins are not known, there are many factors that can worsen the appearance and severity of them, such as; genetics, heat, indulgence of alcohol (mainly red wine) and hormonal imbalances. These are all thought of as triggers for this skin condition, but that doesn’t mean that they cannot be treated.
At Aesthetics of Essex’s Rayleigh clinic, we have a treatment called Sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to improve the appearance of thread veins and spider veins, or eliminate them completely.
Sclerotherapy is a very straight forward procedure that consists of injecting saline directly into the vein, which then forms into a gel-like substance, which then blocks the blood from flowing as close to the surface of the skin, making the vein invisible to the naked eye.
This treatment is FDA approved and has been well practiced and it has been evolving for over 150 years. The process is quick and pretty basic, recovery time is also minimal. We have experienced therapists specialising in this procedure making it virtually painless and no need for topical anaesthetic, our injector is the head nurse at our clinic, her name is Debbie Mills, she has over 20 years of experience in injecting so is highly qualified in this procedure.
Our consultations are free of charge, and upon consultation we can discuss the best course of action for your thread veins, as well as price.
How will I recover?
Treatment is not required to be performed surgically. The patients rests comfortable on a sanitary bed. In order to treat spider veins it is necessary to block the main vein feeding the varices. This could be done surgically, but with Sclerotherapy treatment all that is necessary is to put a needle into the main affected surface vein, rather than dealing with general anaesthesia and the high risks from the surgery.
The actual point of injection is the only discomfort you should experience during this procedure, however we will use a local anaesthetic, on the area you wish to treat. Once injected the treated area may be mildly bruised, swollen or ache. This is normal and shall settle over the next few days. As the product is broken down by the body and blood flows to further areas, superficial veins may soon become apparent again over time, this is normal and is easily treated again by repeating the process.
The number of veins injected in one treatment session depends on the size and location of the veins, therefore this treatment can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how many injections are needed.
The number of sessions required for maximum results will depend on a variety of factors, such as; the thickness of the veins, the length of the veins, the individuals’ age and health. You will be advised on the number of sessions needed during your free Sclerotherapy consultation.
This treatment is the perfect solution to many people who suffer with thread veins, however Sclerotherapy is not suitable for people with large varicose veins, or those who have had veins removed via surgery before.
